WHY BAHRAIN?

Bahrain’s government aims to seek bids from leading construction firms for its ambitious metro railway project during the fourth quarter of 2019. Transport infrastructure is one of the key pillars on Bahrain’s billion-dollar investment plan, part of a wider desire to upgrade its regional competitiveness. The rail project is part of Bahrain’s Public Transport Masterplan 2030, which has recommended the development of 184 km of transit network comprising six lines, which is to be implemented in a phased manner by 2030.

Market Potential

The Kingdom of Bahrain planning to invest a total of $10billion on a railway line connecting to the GCC rail network and a second causeway linking the country with Saudi Arabia and $2billion for metro project.

Bahrain Light Rail

Feasibility studies have been completed and Bahrain is currently in the tendering phase to appoint an operator to run the Bahrain Light Rail project. The monorail project is planned to consist of 109km of light rail. The LRT connection will link the passenger terminal to Bahrain International Airport and other prominent commercial and residential areas in Bahrain. First phase of the LRT will have 30 km of elevated track, 20 stations which is likely to include an airport station. It is expected to have a carrying capacity of 43,000 passengers per hour.

The King Hamad Causeway Project

will connect Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Kingdom of Bahrain by rail and road. The 70 km rail part will connect the proposed Bahrain passenger terminal at Salmabad and freight facilities at Khalifa bin Salman Port to the existing railway line in KSA between Dammam and Al Houfuf. The rail connection will form Bahrain’s link to the GCC railway project and wider KSA rail network.
